Gutierrez looking to build ahead of next season

Jonas Gutierrez believes Newcastle United can improve their performance in the Premier League next season.

Alan Pardew s side finished fifth in the 2011-12 season but showed a marked decline in fortunes this time around, narrowly avoiding relegation in 16th place.

A run to the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals meant Newcastle played an additional 14 fixtures throughout the campaign and the Argentine admitted that they have to learn the lessons from a demanding fixture list.
We have to learn from last season, he told the club s official website.
We made mistakes and we can learn from those to ensure that we don t make them again next year.
It was so important to stay up. When you start the season the first thing you think about is staying up and then you build and progress from there once that is achieved.
Last year was quite a new one for the club because it had been a long time since we were in Europe and we have to learn from that.
The 29-year-old also feels that the St James Park outfit can benefit with some additions to the playing squad, with the transfer window due to re-open on July 1.
We have a really good group of players now, he added.
We have different options in different positions and are much stronger throughout the squad.
If we can add one or two more then things could be even better.
